His father is the distinguished Alfred Shaughnessy, who wrote "Upstairs, Downstairs" and currently has a new book out, "Confessions in Writing." He was born in London, attended Eton and graduated from Cambridge. Things were much different for Shaughnessy growing up in England. After a year, I finally was hired as an actor."Īnd after all of that, Charles and Susan have been married 15 years and have two daughters, Jenny, 8, and Madelyn, 3. They gave me time off to audition for roles. "It was a good job," he said, "boring and uninteresting, but with a steady salary. Finally, a fabric designer hired him to work in the storeroom. Shaughnessy switched to children's videos but got few sales there, as well. ![]() I thought my English accent would be a help, but as one fellow yelled, `Who are you? You sound like the Queen of England!' " I got a job selling adult porno videos over the phone. and it took off like a rocket."Neither of us had a steady job," he continued, "so we moved in with her family and slept on the couch in the living room. "We trusted each other, we enjoyed each other. "I think we just knew how to play off each other," Shaughnessy says of what made the show work. Max hires her to be the nanny of his three kids - and the rest is history. ![]() The Nanny starred Drescher as Fran Fine, a Jewish fashionista from Flushing, Queens, who shows up at the doorstep of British Broadway producer Max Sheffield (Shaughnessy) trying to sell cosmetics. They were the little engine that could during their first season, "and then we went back the second year and it just sort of took off," Shaughnessy says. Network politics had the cast and crew crossing their fingers, but after a solid three episodes, they received an order for three more. The writers tweaked the pilot to better fit Shaughnessy and Drescher, and the result was "the best pilot I had ever seen," the actor recalls. ![]() "You could tell just then that the sort of differences between us worked." But after his first time reading a scene with Fran Drescher, he knew "there was something going on."
